Chesterfield History

Like many other St. Louis County cities, the city of Chesterfield as it is known today, is a consolidation of smaller townships that had built up around a local Post Office. One by one these Post Offices closed until only the Post Office at Chesterfield was left. Those other townships were known as Bellemonte, Hog Hollow or Lake, Gumbo, Monarch and Bonhomme. Justus Post was the founder of Chesterfield in 1817. He laid out the original community along Wild Horse Creek Road in the area that is now between Baxter and Wilson. When Christian Burkhardt moved to the area in 1877, he platted Burkhardt's Subdivision around the Drew Railroad Depot and eventually the town of Chesterfield developed around the railroad depot. This area today is designated at the "Burkhardt Historic District" and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The City of Chesterfield was incorporated in 1988, relatively recent in its long history.
